ReWording: Scrabble meets Tetris (again?)

ReWording is a word-making puzzle game, where quick thinking and strategy decide how long you can last. This sounds like many other word games, but this one you can play from the original Game Boy!

How to play

You start with a hand of  7 letters and a preview of the next 3 cards to come.  You will try to make the longest and highest value words in order to get a better score.

Sounds simple? Well... there is also a countdown, and when it reaches zero, a new letter is added to your hand. If your hand is already full, the game ends.

Use special letters to tilt the odds in your favor:

  • Stars double the score of that word, so a word with 4 stars would have an added x16!
  • Pearls let you remove up to 2 unwanted letters. How else would you get rid of those Qs or Zs...

Features

  • Designed for original Game Boy hardware and emulators
  • Fast-paced, simple, and replayable
  • Simple rules with growing difficulty over time
  • Strategic power-ups to extend your run
  • Save system for highscores

This demo  was created in GB Studio for the GBCompo25 game jam.
Some free third-party assets were also used:

GBDK_Dictionary by Bbbbbr and its corresponding plug-in for GB studio by Pau-tomas

*DISCLAIMER: This game is currently a demo with one game mode. More modes and features might come in the future. Also, please excuse the repetitive soundtrack...

I played a little and had to stop cause I could see myself getting really addicted to this. Nice work!

Thank you for playing!

I should add a warning label then: "Highly addictive, consume responsively"

Great work! This is one of my favorites from the compo this year.

That's awesome! Thank you for trying it out. What would you like to see in a more complete version?

I would love a "no pressure" mode where there is no time pressure per word

That's something I was considering as a zen/practice mode with no time preassure, no points and unlimited removal of unwanted letters.

A time free mode that still has points would also be a good idea, but I would need a way for the game to check if there are no more words possible...

ah I can see why the time pressure is important mechanically then. Perhaps you could give the player a way to surrender as an alternative

This is really great! :O I'm bad at word games but I still find them fun haha I got a score of almost 300 so far :)

Thats a pretty good score for first time playing!

Something I pay attention to is the balance between vowels and consonants. For instance, if I see that I'm running out of vowels, I'll try to make a word with more consonants in order to get rid of some of them and make space for new letters (with hopefully more vowels)
